Vinyl FAQs
When you’re shopping for new floors consider your budget, functionality, subfloor and design preferences. Vinyl stands up best against excess moisture and spills, and it can be less expensive than laminate. However laminate gives a more realistic wood effect to enhance the design aesthetic in your home.
In our opinion we think it’s down to personal choice, there are so many vinyl flooring ranges available, it would be hard to choose one range or product.
The Pros to a vinyl flooring are low maintenance, water resistant, slip resistant, cost effective, long lasting, comfortable feel underfoot, warm underfoot on cold days and straight forward installation.
The Cons are surface vulnerability, subfloor issues and corrosive or staining spills need to be cleaned promptly.
The average cost of vinyl flooring is around £10-£25 per square metre.
Underlay is not required for vinyl flooring, however it’s imperative that your subfloor is in perfect condition for the installation. This ensures that you get the best look for your vinyl flooring with a smooth finish.
Surface Vulnerability – The spongy soft feel of vinyl can also make the material more susceptible to cuts and gouges from sharp object like Heavy knifes. Obviously, this is a concern mostly in the kitchen area.
Sub Floor Issues – it’s a good news/ bad news situation. The good news is vinyl flooring can be installed over an intact clean subfloor without modifications. The bad news is, if the subfloor is less than optimal then repairs or improvements will be required to install the vinyl flooring.
Colours can fade – although this sounds bad, it’s not as bad as you think, the colours my fade on the vinyl due to exposure to too much direct sunlight. Which is why we do not recommend for outdoor use or rooms that have direct sunlight on them all the time.
Vinyl floor has more depth and texture now than it did a generation ago, so it can look like hardwood, stone and tiles, and it comes in a variety of designs and colours.
Vinyl floors can scratch. As flooring options go, vinyl floors are durable and don’t require much maintenance to maintain. They are waterproof, with strong surfaces. Still like any floor, they are susceptible to damage.
